I have Hashimoto’s. In 6 years I have never had to take hormones and I keep my TSH, T3 and T4 in a nice harmonious range that enables me to function in life.
I do this by of course Chinese medicine and acupuncture, but also, diet. I’m 99.9% vigilant about what I put in my body. But last night I ordered take away- it’s been so long since I had a Gluten/Pollution reaction that I thought maybe I’d get away with it this time, that it could all have been in my mind.
I enjoyed an instant potato mash which had God knows what in it. And MAN it tasted good!!! I thoroughly got into it. Mmmmm… Within minutes though I had an initial mild stomach pain that went away quickly after. 10 minutes later I felt like ants were crawling around under my skin and through my blood stream. I had muscular fatigue and pain. I woke up early am way before any self-respecting alarm. I had a bad dream. I woke up anxious. It will leave me with fatigue and mind fog today until I go through the effort of organising myself or someone else to treat it with acupuncture. And I am not formally diagnosed with gluten intolerance or any other intolerance. But I know it is there.
We can speculate about many factors contributing to these causes. We can talk about couples starting their families later, after a hardworking career has been established. The fact that our culture does not conceive of taking a rest unless it is a holiday we’ve booked ahead months before and jet off somewhere to do nothing for 2 weeks before coming back to work is indicative of this worship of achievement and action and not quietude or rest. That will definitely affect reproduction, we can talk about medicines, air pollution, increased international travel, and food. And given that we take the food and put it right inside our bodies and several times a day, I would say that among the greatest of these is food.
I have worked 6 years in fertility and 90% of the cases I see are ‘unexplained’ fertility, or age related. Ovaries are becoming impervious to sperm, sperm are becoming more and more mal-formed, counts are lower. A host of immune factors can prevent conception once in the Uterus. Australian Bureau of statistics tell us that 1 in 6 Australian couples are not able to mix their genetic material together to form a viable pregnancy without assisted reproductive techniques. That’s a high proportion of the population. I have done enough reading and seen enough in clinic to know that even if your symptoms aren’t as clear as my obvious triggers are, that you may still be being affected by all the myriad seen and unseen things that get put into any basic food these days. Potato mash is not just potato mash. It’s a series of hydrolysed.. I dunno.. vegetable oils and preservatives and flavourings. But what are all these things? And can they be affecting our reproductive systems?
Food intolerances are on the rise. No one had peanut allergies that I know of when I was a child. Now every child has to be careful what they take to school lest they accidentally cause an anaphylactic and potentially fatal reaction in another child just by throwing their muesli bar wrappers in the bin.
If you want brilliant resources about food, what to read in regards to food and diet- check out Sean Croxten of Underground Wellness – he has podcasts, short youtube videos, book recommendations, all on his website or youtube. His videos turned my life around so that I can live a healthy, non-thyroid killing life. cidentally provide an anaphylactic shock to an allergic child just by throwing their wrapper in the bin. I was treating a couple 2 years ago who finally conceived after RELIGIOUSLY following a pure organic diet high in antioxidants and eliminating chemicals, even from their household cleaning and shampoo- their hair looked less than exciting for 6 months but they are now pregnant with their second child!
Be careful what you put into your mouth. You may not have a reaction as obvious as mine was, but with so many chemicals available in every food product, you need to be just as vigilant about what you feed your cells as I do living with Hashimoto’s when you are trying to conceive a baby.
I know you can do this. If I can, anyone can!! Changing your diet can seem very daunting at first but there is so much beautiful food available, you will feel more energy, look more beautiful, and feel clearer, calmer and happier mentally also.
Totally worth it.
If you want to go deeper on these and other topics, and feel inspired by case studies I share from clinic I have a live event discussing all things nutrition, conception and happy fertility journeys coming up.
